Who We Are

Hillsboro Fantasy Book Club serves as a vibrant part of the Hillsboro community. We host monthly in-person meetings (typically 15-20 participants) and support an online community through our website, Facebook, and Instagram. Our goal is to offer a rich atmosphere for fantasy enthusiasts to engage and grow together.

Members can access Google Forms, Excel documents, and a wealth of resources, like meeting schedules, Side Quests, surveys, and TBR lists.

We typically choose two books a month for our monthly book club. In 2026, we selected themes from the TBR survey to align the book choices with member requests. Every quarter, we'll vote to determine the book choices for the next three months.

These books are either stand-alone books that are too long for a monthly reading experience, or series that our members want to dive into.

📚 The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern 📚

We got completely lost in The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. Everyone adored the immersive, fairytale-like imagery and the circus itself. It so vivid it almost feels alive. Characters, especially Bailey, Marco, and Isobel, were compelling, with complex bonds, childhood trauma, and choices that shaped their lives in surprising ways. The story is both magical and melancholic, with love, sacrifice, and autonomy tangled up in the circus’s mysterious power. A dreamy, bittersweet ride where the world-building steals the show.

📚The Lost Queen by Signe Pike📚

The verdict on the start of this series was mixed not amazing. The historical vibes and world-building got major points, but most readers struggled with the pacing, flat characters, and the lack of a driving plot. Romance didn’t resonate, time jumps frustrated, and some felt disconnected from the story entirely - though the hints of magic and historical detail were appreciated. Definitely a book where the atmosphere shines more than the "action"!

Jim Butcher brought us a cozy, adventurous steampunk romp with cats who have their own society, a crew full of quirky personalities, and a villain who keeps you on edge. The story starts with world-building, but once the adventure kicks in, it’s funny, engaging, and hooks you with each character’s growth - especially with Gwen finding her place. While some of the magic and world details are complex, the mix of camaraderie, mystery, and imaginative setting makes it a delightful, page-turning read.

This novel is a hard-hitting, thought-provoking fantasy that confronts privilege, power, and the consequences of selfish choices, with a magic system tied to capitalism that makes every action weighted. 📚Anathema by Keri Lake📚

This one had us talking. The magic and darker world pulled us in, but the story felt scattered with too many loose ends, plot holes, rushed relationships (even though it was a 'slow burn'), and trauma that wasn’t handled with much care. Some loved the creepy, almost Wizard of Oz / Alice in Wonderland meets horror vibe and the magical world and system, others wanted more depth (and fewer unrelated or non-plot serving info dumps).

📚All the Murmuring Bones by A.G Slatter📚

This one sounded like a haunting fairytale with Irish folklore, family curses and mermaid with nefarious intentions but the storytelling left us divided. We loved the premise and vibes in general, but the pacing and structure felt scattered. The folklore was rich at times, yet the emotional depth?.... a bit shallow. The main character drifted through murder, magic, and motherhood with little reaction, leaving us wondering if that detachment was intentional by the author for the storytelling style or just poor execution. The bones of the story was there, but overall it needed more life threaded in.

June Books Announcement + 6 month recap

📚We are going to do things a little differently for June due to it being a shorter turnaround time than usual (our next meeting with be June 15th). June is a high time of travel and adventure for most; kids are out of school, families are planning vacation, and overall just a lot of activities. For this reason, we are only officially reading one book! Our next meeting will be on June 15th @ 1:00pm📚

✨Instead of a second book, come to the June meeting with a show and tell of a book you have read recently (or are excited to read) that you loved. Everyone is always excited to hear book recommendations and hear different ideas and preferences!✨

📚Our June book club choice will explore the rich and imaginative world of LGBTQIA fantasy – a subgenre where magic, identity, and diverse representation come together to tell powerful stories. This subgenre reimagines traditional fantasy tropes through inclusive and affirming lenses where queerness isn’t a subplot or an afterthough, but woven into the very heart of the tales the author is telling. It includes characters across the spectrum of sexual orientations and gender identities that expand the emotional depth and narrative possibilities of fantasy, offering space for queer joy, love, struggle and triumph. It invites us to imagine new worlds where everyone belongs and where every kind of love and identity can be heroic and celebrated.📚
